Description
Spanish for 5th-8th graders is a fantastic opportunity to familiarize students with commonly used vocabulary and basic conversational skills, while also building organizational, note-taking, and study skills. Language will be presented through monthly themes and reinforced through fun games, songs, worksheets, and Quizlet. Students will actively engage in conversation together to practice common sentence frames to which they can apply the vocabulary while learning frequently used irregular verbs and their proper application. The goal of this class is to build a solid foundation of vocabulary to help demystify second language acquisition and ease the transition into Spanish 1. Monthly themes will vary from year to year, so younger students may repeat the class to continue to build and grow their vocabulary and fundamental conversational skills. By the end of the year, students will be able to introduce themselves and share details about their family, hobbies, and favorite things (food, colors, animals) as well as discuss the date, seasons, weather, and time. Music, art, holidays, and food of Spanish-speaking countries will be shared quarterly to grow awareness of the culture. Approximately 1.25 hrs of homework per week to reinforce and aid in the memorization and learning of vocabulary and sentence frames. Access to computer and internet is needed for study tools and a digital project assigned each semester.
Required Text: There will not be a textbook for this class, but worksheets will be given out weekly. Students will need access via a phone, tablet or computer to use Quizlet at home.
