Which Writing Class Should my Student Take?
We have some exciting options for writing this year! Which one is right for your student?
- IEW Level A. IEW Level A is an excellent choice for students who:
- Are new to a formal writing program but are ready to write paragraphs;
- Are reluctant writers, especially if they have difficulty figuring out what to write;
- Feel like they don’t understand writing, and wish it were more logical;
- Need need concrete steps and time-management help;
- Are ready for formal writing and enjoy reading and writing about myths, legends, and fairy tales.
- IEW Level A covers summaries, storytelling, report writing, and informal 5-paragraph essays.
- IEW Level A is appropriate for 3rd graders who read at grade level and who can already write paragraphs and have help at home. It’s also appropriate for 7th and even 8th graders who have not had a formal writing class and are reluctant writers or who have other reasons they don’t want to jump into Level B. It’s also appropriate for all the grades in-between!
- IEW Level B. Level B is an excellent choice for older students who:
- Have already had some writing instruction and are ready to take it to the next level;
- Want to be well-prepared for high school writing;
- Are ready to handle weekly writing and editing assignments.
- IEW B covers summaries, storytelling, report writing from multiple sources, informal essays, formal essays, and responses to literature.
- IEW B has all the benefits of IEW A (concrete steps, no worries about figuring out what to write about) but goes further.
- WriteShop Jr. Level F. This is a new Thrive offering! WriteShop is an excellent choice for students who:
- Have taken IEW Level A but are not yet ready for B and don’t want another IEW class right now;
- Are looking for a class that is more relaxed, with less homework;
- Benefit from a gentler, multi-sensory approach;
- Have less trouble thinking about what to write;
- Want to do writing that is more creative and less academic-focused, but not a full creative writing class..
- Middle School Creative Writing. This class is perfect for students who:
- Enjoy creative writing;
- Are ready to stretch their skills in self-expression by writing poetry and short stores;
- Have had academic writing classes and want to try something new.
- In Middle School Creative Writing we will imitate famous authors to learn their secrets, explore story sequences, write stories, and try our hand at several different types of poetry.
